Tanaka, Ichikawa Town, Hyogo.
A village in the middle of rice fields.
Its name says exactly where it is: “in the rice fields.”
Tanaka means “in the rice fields.” The name captures the landscape: homes, paths, and the work of the village gathered among fields.
During the Edo period, Tanaka was a village in Jinsai District. Its life was tied to the fields, mountain water, and the roads connecting the settlements of the valley.
In 1889, Tanaka merged with Sawa, Misa, Tsurui, Kanzaki, and Komuro to become a district of Tsurui Village. The village remained part of that wider community through the Meiji period.
Goshoji, a Soto Zen temple, stands against the green foothills with rice fields before it. The temple’s quiet setting reflects the name of the village around it.
In 1955, Tsurui merged with Amaji, Kawabe, and Seka to form Ichikawa Town. Tanaka continues as one of its districts, a village at the heart of productive fields.
